VINCENZO MAROTTA - OUR MASTER TAILOR

Vincenzo was born in Saviano, Italy. At 8 years old he would go
to a neighbor’s tailor shop and learn how to take slacks and jackets
apart. He would prep them for the tailor. He continued to watch,
do, and learn how to alter and observe the tailor make suits.
He continued his apprenticeship and simultaneously went
to design school in Naples and would move on to the next level
when he was able to make a sport coat from measurements.
He completed this task at 17.

Vincenzo moved to work with a master tailor, and continued in design
school with added schooling in fabric cutting, He learned to make patterns
from designs and cut the fabric from the pattern.In the early 60’s Vincent left
Italy for Savile Row in London, England. There he worked for different
design houses and continued to improve his skills. After marrying,
he and his bride left for New Britain, CT.

Vincent arrived and immediately started work at G.Fox & Company and
Steins of West Hartford. He left to be his own boss and opened a tailor shop
in New Britain. Vincenzo being energetic and creative eventually
went to New York to learn more about pattern making. He created patterns
and products for Agatha Christie, Bill Blass, Christian Dior,
Jones of New York and others.

Vincenzo eventually returned to New Britain to open a woman’s coat
manufacturing company. His company grew to 75 employees as he continued
to make patterns and garments for various designers. Bill Blass sent a coat
design to Vincenzo to make a coat for Nancy Reagan. This coat was
worn at her husband’s presidential inauguration. Eventually he closed
his manufacturing operations to return to tailoring full time.

All Cashmere is not equal! You can almost see the softness!

There is a common misconception that all cashmere is

created equal. Not so! There are several characteristics

of this unique fiber that affect both the price and the

quality of the garment made from it. When manufacturers

are pressed to make a less expensive garment they do two

things. They use cheaper cashmere and they use less of

it in the garment. Lets look at the cost of the cashmere first.

There are significant differences in the quality and therefore

the price of the fiber that can be used in a cahmere garment.

There are variations in the fineness of the cashmere from various

origins. There are also more subtle variations within origins.

Finer cashmere is more expensive than coarser cashmere. Our

fingers are very sensitive. They can feel the difference between

coarse and fine cashmere. So the consumer can usually spot

sweaters cheapened in this way. Color also plays a role. The

whiter, more expensive fiber is more versatile. It can dyed to

any color. Darker, cheaper cashmeres are often bleached white

and then dyed. This reduces the softness of the fober significantly.

"Let your fingers do the walking" and you feel the difference.

Cashmere fiber is also priced by its length because it makes

a stronger yarn that pills less. This factor cannot be deduced

by examining a garment. It only becomes obvious after wearing.

Garments made from longer fiber will pill less and last longer.

So fiber fineness, color, and length each play a role in the cost

variation between seemingly similar garments.

Cashmere is expensive. A manufacturer pressed to reduce his

price will often just make the garment lighter. The less cashmere

used, the lower the price of the garment. The most common way

to do this is to loosen the tension on the knitting machine.

This will makethe fabric of the garment looser, more porous, limp.

A good, tightlyknit fabric will have resilience, density.When you

pull the sides of thegarment apart and let them go the garment

will snap back to shape.The increased density will hold the

fibers in the yarn, reducing pilling and increasing wear.

Cheaper sweaters often contain the combination of

shorter fiber and loose knitting. This is a disatrous recipe

that will yield a sweater sure to pill.

Our advice; "You get what you pay for". When shopping

for cashmere look for value. In the long run, you will be better off.

This is our tailors new work shop. Vincent, our master

tailor, enjoys his new efficient work area. He is able

to do both alterations on items not purchased here,

and do all our in house tailoring needs.

Vincent also uses our pressing to do the finishing touches

to everything he alters. He talking with Nate Zahner, our

carpenter, about some carpentry changes he would like to

have done.

AJ Kulpano is looking forward to Zack's wedding

which took place on July 2nd. You are able to

rent a tuxedo as small as 2 and as big as 72. We can meet the needs

of your wedding party and give the men the fit as if they were buying

a black suit.

Vincent is a Master Tailor

Over the past 60 years we have had many fine tailors. People would come from Mansfield,

Coventry, Andover, Columbia, Hebron, Bolton, Manchester,Glastonbury, South Windsor,

East Windsor, Ellington, Tolland, Willington, Union, Stafford, Somers, Enfield, Suffield, and

beyond. We continue with this fine tradition of expert tailoring with our master tailor, Vincent.

Vincent has been with us a relatively short time but his reputation for expert tailoring has

preceded him. We have had customers from UCONN and the storrs campus come to have

something old and new altered by Vincent and they have learned how a pant or jacket should fit.

Vincent, our master tailor, started out in this field at the age of 8. He continued to sew until

the age of thirteen when he went off to design school in Naples. There is more but at this time

we will stop at the age of 13. Stay tuned and we will have a continuing story of Vincent's life.

We are in the midst of Prom season and all things are going well. The $99. special

Proms this week are Ellington, Somers, RHAM, South Windsor junior prom,

This is a Great new adventure. But before we move we must reduce our inventory so we don't
have to carry so much down the street from our current location at 520 Hartford Turnpike.

Our Sale will continue until June 25th. We should reopen by July 12th.

Zahner's is moving to new location near Rein's Deli for July first
